Size-Dependent Melting Properties of Small Tin Particles: Nanocalorimetric Measurements.
نویسندگان
چکیده
For the first time, the latent heat of fusion DHm for Sn particles formed by evaporation on inert substrate with radii ranging from 5 to 50 nm has been measured directly using a novel scanning nanocalorimeter. A particle-size-dependent reduction of DHm has been observed. An “excluded volume” is introduced to describe the latent heat of fusion from the enhanced surface melting of small particles. Melting point depression has also been found by our nanocalorimetric technique. [S0031-9007(96)00495-4]

Size-dependent melting point depression of nanostructures: Nanocalorimetric measurements
The melting behavior of 0.1–10-nm-thick discontinuous indium films formed by evaporation on amorphous silicon nitride is investigated by an ultrasensitive thin-film scanning calorimetry technique. The films consist of ensembles of nanostructures for which the size dependence of the melting temperature and latent heat of fusion are determined. The relationship between the nanostructure radius an...
متن کاملSynthesis of Silver, Chromium, Manganese, Tin and Iron Nano Particles by Different Techniques
Nano technology has a large number of applications in different fields of science and technology. Nano particle are the tiny particles which are being used in upcoming technology due to their small size and high capability. The properties of nanoparticles depend largely on their synthesis procedures. There are different methods for the synthesis of nano particles using differen...
متن کاملMicrowave–Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis and Optical Characterization of SnO2 Nanoparticles
Semiconductor nanoparticles exhibit size dependent properties due to quantum confinement effect that are not present in their bulk counterparts. In this work, extremely fine and pure SnO2 nanoparticles of ~1.1 nm size were synthesized by a solution process, in which amorphous precipitate of SnO2 was crystallized by microwave heating. The particles sizes varied from ~1.1 to ~2.7 nm. By XRD analy...
متن کاملTin clusters that do not melt: Calorimetry measurements up to 650 K
Recent theoretical studies fK. Joshi, D. G. Kanhere, and S. A. Blundell, Phys. Rev. B 67, 235413 s2003dg predict that Sn20 melts at around 1200 K. We have performed calorimetry measurements on unsupported Sn18 + , Sn19 + , Sn20 + , and Sn21 + in an effort to test this prediction. We find that these tin clusters disappear well below their predicted melting temperature due to dissociation. Calori...
متن کاملP2.67 Retrieval of Microphysical Properties of Snow Using Spectral Dual Polarization Analysis
Snow crystals consist of many different types of ice particles. Typical radar measurements observe only bulk properties of all types of ice particles present in a radar volume. Due to their difference in cross-section, large particles will reflect more power of the transmitted radar signal than small particles. If small and large particles are present in the same radar volume with comparable vo...
